Towards the end in Alice in Wonderland, Alice is invited to play croquet.  When she learns how to swing the croquet mallet and is just about to strike, the mallet turns into a flamingo.  As she goes to strike again, the flamingo lifts its head.  So she learns how to swing the flamingo, taking account of the lifting head.  As she attempts another strike however, the ball turns into a hedgehog!                                                      (with thanks to Lewis Carroll).
